Antarctica Imax Excursion Recount

On Thursday 11th of August 2011, Stage 3 classes went to the Maritime Museum and the IMAX theatre in Darling Harbour.

We went by bus and it took approximately 40 minutes! We first went to the Maritime Museum. Everyone had to wear an orange sticker labelled 'MUSEUM' before entering the museum for security purposes.

The place we went inside the museum was about Scott and Amundsen's adventure in Antarctica. There were objects that they used like pots and pans, as well as tools and clothing. There were also rocks that was brought from Antarctica.

After that everyone had recess while walking towards the IMAX Theatre. We were about to watch two movies in a row. One was about Antarctica, whilst the other one was about Shackleton's Adventure. The classes first watched the one about Antarctica.It was a bit boring to some people, however, we learnt a lot about Antarctica, like how the climate changed throughout the years. Then we watched 'Shackleton's Adventure'. It was very interesting. We learnt that Shackleton was very brave throughout his adventure.

When we finished watching the movies, we headed off to a park near the IMAX Theatre to eat lunch. Some people bought McDonalds! We stayed at the park for about 45 minutes.

It was a long, tiring but fun day. We all enjoyed the excursion.

Canberra Recount

On Wednesday 6th April 2011, Years 5 and 6 went to Canberra to learn about democracy, to have fun and to experience new things. The students travelled on a bus which was as comfortable as a warm bed in winter. As the bus pulled away the children shouted, "Canberra here we come!".

When Years 5 and 6 arrived they went to the National Capital Planning and Development Centre where they discovered that Walter Burley Griffin planned Canberra and that Canberra was an aboriginal word that means "meeting place". Next stop was the National Museum of Australia and then it was time for lunch. After the studnets finished their lunch, they went to the Australian War Memorial. The teachers told them that before entering, they should remember to show respect for the people who had died in the war. The War Memorial was a fascinating but also sad experience.

After the War Memorial, the children went to Questacon. Here they were able to see a tornado, tsunami and sit through an earthquake. Finally the group arrived at the Canberra Carotel Motel. They quickly unpacked, had a mouth-watering dinner, then went to the Australian Institute of Sport. It was so interesting because the children were able to play games such as football and try their hand at rowing.

The next day their first destination was the Electoral Education Office where the children learnt how to vote. Next stop was Parliament House. It was fascinating and the students felt happy because they learnt many new things. The last stop was Mt Ainslie. The view from the mountain was amazing and the students got some wonderful photos of the parliamentary triangle.

After a great two days in Canberra, Years 5 and 6 departed and returned to Sydney to be with their families.

Welcome to the new school year! We hope you had a great break and are looking forward to lots of new experiences in 2011.

Government Unit

In Term 3, HSIE Stage 3 is studying a very interesting unit on Government. As well as experiencing a real Federal election, we have also been on an excursion to State Parliament House and had our local member for East Hills, Mr Alan Ashton visit us to discuss this interesting topic. We are learning a lot about the complexities of the different tiers of government, their responsibities and the democratic approach to voting.

On Monday 6th of April Stage 3 students went to Canberra for one night. At about 6am everyone arrived at the front of the school. The bus driver’s name was Allen.

It took us 3 hours till our first stop near McDonalds. After the stop we went to New Parliament House where we got a tour. At New Parliament House we saw amazing pictures, rooms and much more. Then we had lunch which we brought from home. After that year 5 went to the National Museum of Australia. At the National Museum of Australia l had lots of fun because there were cool interative things to do and learn. At about 3:00 to 3:30 we went to the Electoral Education Centre where l learned some new things.

Near the end of the day both year 5 and 6 went to the Institute of Sport. There was a gift shop where l bought a few things and we saw big pools, gyms and lots more. At the end there was a room were there was fun sports games and my favourite was basketball. After that we went back on the bus for at least 20-25 mins drive till we got to our Motor Inn. When we got to our Motor Inn we got off our bus, took our bags, and then Aredi got the key and we checked out our cabin with Crystal. Then we had dinner, it was ok .We had vegetables and lasagne. After dinner we went back to our cabins and settled in .We talked for a while and watched TV but it didn’t work well. After that Mrs Bowen came in to say “Its lights out’’ so then we went to bed.

In the morning the teachers knocked on our door to wake us up. We got dressed and had breakfast, l had cereal. After breakfast everyone went back to their cabins (including us) to tidy up. Mrs Raft checked our room and we took our bags and put them outside the door. As soon as all the rooms were checked we went on the bus. As we drove past we saw many National Embassies like French, Chinese and many more.

At about nine o’clock we went to the National Capital Planning and Development Centre. At the National Capital Planning and Development Centre we saw a video about how women couldn’t vote until 1920. After that we went to the War Memorial, it was really sad. At the War Memorial l saw amazing things like aeroplanes, suits, submarines and the list could go on. Then we went outside (still in War Memorial) where there were two walls full of men and women who died in war and there were poppies there too. Then we went to the gift shop. I bought a book mark for 50c. We had lunch at the War Memorial picnic grounds supplied by the Motel.

After lunch we went to Questacon The National Science and Technology Centre. That’s what everyone was waiting for. When we arrived at Questacon everyone was excited. Then a lady who worked at Questacon told us some rules and off we went at the top of the spiral. We played a few games but that wasn’t it. We reached the next level which was pretty much about sharks and we watched this movie about sharks. It was kind of boring but l learned some new things about sharks. The next level was about electricity and lightning and that kind of stuff .Then l went on a ride called Earthquake House. I went on it with Hedi, Mrs Raft and some other children .Earthquake House is like a real earth quake in the house but all under control. Then we reached the next level. It was a carnival. The first ride l went on was called Free Fall it was a long, long slide. Free Fall was fun but it was also scary. The next ride was my last ride because the line was really long. Track Tack was the best ride because it's like a real rollercoaster because there’s a video of train tracks and when the video starts to move so does the machine too... its really cool!

After my last ride we all went back on the bus to leave Canberra. The bus driver put a movie on. It was Walli-E and after the movie we had a stop near McDonalds for afternoon tea. After 3 hours we reached Padstow on time (home sweet home). Allen took our bags off the bus. We took our bags and everyone went home. My brother picked me up. I had a really great time at Canberra.
