Adeline's Recount of the Stage 3 Rainforest Excursion

Our Excursion to Minnamurra Rainforest and the Illawarra Fly

On the 23rd of February 2012, Stage 3 went on an excursion to the Minnamurra Rainforest and Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk. The purpose of this excursion was to learn more about our H.S.I.E unit 'Rainforests'.

We left school at 07:15 and returned home at 16:30. We arrived at the Minnamurra Rainforest at approximately 08:30 and we went into a classroom and learnt about rainforests. We learnt about the layers of a rainforest. The layers are the forest floor, the understorey, the canopy and the emergent layer. We also learnt about stragler figs, lyrebirds and bower birds.

Later on, we had a walk around the rainforest. We saw a lot of birds' nests and leaf litter on the ground. We also heard lots of different noises.

After our walk we hopped onto the bus and we went to the Illawarra Fly. We had lunch and then we went up a ramp, until we were above the canopy.

The path we were on was very safe, although it was quite wobbly and some students were very frightened. Those students stayed where they were and the rest of us went up another ramp to a lookout point. The view was sublime and a lot of people stayed for a minute to enjoy it. Then we came back to where the others were. After that, we went up another ramp where there was a tower at the end. Many people went on that ramp but not many went up the tower. It was exhilarating going up the tower aswell as scary but everyone was determined to reach the top. At the top, we were as tall as the emergent layer of the rainforest (maybe even taller!), and we could see all around Illawarra. Some students could see Woollongong! Everyone was taking pictures, but unfortunately some were banging the tower so it felt like it was going to tip.

After that we walked back to the bus stop and caught the bus some. We arrived back at school half an hour later than expected. By the time the bus parked, everyone was exhausted. Overall we all had a wonderful time and it's not something you can experience every day!
